Chinese scientists say they have developed a human vaccine for bird flu. Clinical tests will be carried out in a matter of days.

To date, there has not been a single effective vaccine to fight bird flu in humans -- until now. China says it has developed a vaccine based on traditional Chinese medicine that may be able to cure H5N1 avian influenza.

Jia Jingdun, Deputy Director, Nat'l Bird Flu Prevention & Research CTR, said, "According to the lab tests, the vaccine is effective and safe on mice. And we have also kept pace with peers overseas. The next step is to request clinical tests."

This vaccine has been jointly developed by the national disease control and research center and a Beijing-based pharmaceutical factory. The first phase of clinical tests will begin later this month.
