This is President Hu Jintao' s second visit to Russia this year. Last month he was among the foreign leaders who traveled to Moscow to mark the 60th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany. Early this month, China and Russia reached a final settlement on their eastern border. After 40 years of negotiation, this dispute has finally been relegated to the pages of history.
And progress in relations has not just been political. Trade and economic cooperation has also intensified, especially in the fields of petroleum, natural gas, electricity, railways and machinery manufacturing. The Chinese government is also putting its weight behind Russia's bid to enter the World Trade Organization.
Cultural exchanges are active as well. This month, artists from the two countries gave a joint performance for the 60th anniversary of Russia's victory in the Second World War.
As two of the region's major powers, China and Russia are also making joint efforts to maintain regional security. This time in Moscow, President Hu is expected to talk with his Russian counterpart about the first-ever joint exercise between their militaries, scheduled for September. An expert in the field, Professor Ji Zhiye believes that mutual trust is to thank for all this progress.
Ji Zhiye, Professor of China Inst. of Contemporary Int'l Relations said, "Mutual political trust brings more opportunities for cooperation and benefits the peoples of both countries. This helps to improve friendly relations across the board and contributes to the stability and prosperity of the region as a whole."
But, as is only natural between two such massive neighbors, China and Russia do have their frictions. These are concentrated in the areas of trade and energy. But some analysts say cooperation greatly outweighs the disputes.
Ji Zhiye also said, "Both China and Russia are in a period of social transformation. It's inevitable that the two countries will have some problems in their relations as they develop. But they're moving in a positive direction. I think through dialogue, they'll be able to find a way to solve their disputes, and further strengthen mutual understanding. "
Professor Ji said President Hu' s visit is of great importance. It provides an opportunity for both sides to talk face to face, which will help promote cooperation and lessen disputes.
