Introduction to Victoria Hamilton

Born and brought up in Gibraltar (a British colony in the south of Spain), I was always bound to have an interesting upbringing. Surrounded by English, Spanish and Arabic speakers, my interest in learning different languages and cultures started from an early age. 18 years later I decided to learn Chinese having already got Spanish and French under my belt, so headed off to Leeds University to do a BA in Chinese and Sociology. Upon graduation I headed back to Beijing (I had already spent one year of study there and a few months working during university holidays), as I had been given a 6 month internship with the BBC Bureau. It was then that I decided that I really wanted to be part of the media world. I wasn鈥檛 sure how this was going to happen, but was hoping my experience at one of the world鈥檚 most prestigious news organizations would give me a push in the right direction!

10 months later I flew back home to sort out where the next few years were going to take me and managed to land myself a job as the news anchor for Gibraltar Television. This was an amazing experience and a great year of my life. But as always, China was pulling me back, just as it had nearly every holiday I had had before then. I decided to use my media knowledge to find a job in the Chinese media in Beijing. Within three months of being back in China, I was offered the superb job of 鈥榟ost鈥 for Rediscovering China. How could I refuse?!

I joined CCTV-9 in January 2004, and within that time I have covered a vast area of land reporting and meeting new and interesting people. From big cities like Shanghai and Guangdong to remote areas around the Inner Mongolian grasslands and villages far far north on the Russian border, I鈥檝e been there!!! Although not a travel programme as such, we do get around the country! If there are any areas which you would like to know more about which come under our programme heading, I would love to hear from you. We try to come up with as many different cultural ideas as possible, but once you鈥檝e been living in China for a while, it鈥檚 hard to see things through the eyes of an outsider! Drop me an email!
