In 2007, UNESCO created a new world heritage site in southern China – the Kaiping diaolou and villages. The diaolou, or watchtowers, are fortified residences, the first of which were built at the time of the Qing Dynasty. Construction reached a height in the 1920s and 30s, funded by the remittances sent back home by workers who had gone overseas to seek their fortune.
Rising incomes in China have generated a growing interest in adventure sports, particularly among the country’s young urban residents. Clubs have sprung up, organizing outings in which members drive, climb or walk across some of the country’s most inhospitable landscapes. One such club is the Liupanshui Outdoor Sports Association, whose members regularly take their lives into their hands by exploring some of the rugged scenery in the Southwest.
