2009-11-11 10:58 BJT

The season's first snowfall in Indian-controlled Kashmir's premier hill resort Gulmarg elicited cheers from tourists on Monday. Snow began falling early on Monday, after three months of dry weather.

The whole town was soon covered in a thick white blanket of snow. Locals, who depend on tourism for their livelihoods, were also happy after the fresh snowfall.

Besides Gulmarg, which is 55 kilometers north of the region's main city, Srinagar, there were also reports of moderate snowfall in the tourist resorts of the Sonamarg and Gurez sector, as well as Sadhna Pass, in Kupwara District.
