Thailand has officially asked for the extradition of the ousted, former prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, from Cambodia, but in vain. In a statement rejecting the extradition request, the Cambodian Foreign Ministry called the prosecution of Thaksin "a politically-motivated proceeding" and said it was a consequence of the 2006 coup d'etat.
The ongoing visit of Thaksin, and his new post as economic advisor, has further chilled an already-strained relationship between the two nations. They have both withdrawn their ambassadors and Thailand is reviewing a number of agreements between them.
