Fixed-phone service sees more pricing options

China Telecom and China Netcom, the countries' two fixed line telephone service operators, are planning to offer more payment choices.

The two companies recently received a request from the State Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Information Industry, on carrying out more charging options for the convenience of the consumers. Currently in China, the fixed land-line telephone service fee is collected monthly, and the new rules enable the user to pay by days or by pre-paid charges. Meanwhile, telecom operators are required to protect users' benefits by giving the rights to either keeping their current charging standard or to choose another pricing option. The new policy is aimed to confront challenges from mobile phone companies who are competing against each other with simply low prices.
