China's five ministries and commissions have jointly issued a statement to tighten control on motorcycle exports. From March 2006, more rigid regulation is going to be imposed on the country's messy motorcycle industry.

China's Ministry of Commerce, the National Development and Reform Commission, the General Administration of Customs as well as the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine will move to strengthen controls on quality and product certification. China's motorcycle exports have topped the world for the fifth year in a row. But problems with quality and pricing has hurt China's reputation and profitability in this market. Unhealthy competition is evidenced by sales of products at prices lower than the production costs, and attacks on competitors' reputation are common. China's vice Finance Minister Wei Jianguo said the country is aiming to compete with strong and credible brands. The statement sends out a tough warning that exporters using fake documents will be strictly punished this year.
