Switzerland-based pharmaceuticals giant Novartis is building its manufacturing and R&D center in Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu Province. It is the first "active pharmaceutical ingredients", or API export base built by a multinational pharma giant in China.

Jeffrey Lee, president of Novartis China said all the API products will be exported to support laboratory drug development in Europe and the United States. The Suzhou plant will also produce ingredients which will be used on innovative drugs for leukaemia and hypertension. The initial investment will reach 83 million US dollars and the center is expected to come online by the end of 2007, with a total investment of 100 million US dollars.
