China Unicom and Apple are close to sealing a deal to sell the iPhone in China.

China Unicom is the only domestic telecom operator that holds a WCDMA license. WCDMA is the only 3G technology that iPhone can use in China. The number of cellphone users in China has reached 687 million, 3 times the size of the US market.

The iPhone is expected to hit the world's largest mobile market this October. Analysts are predicting iPhone China users to reach 2.9 million by 2011.
