Construction of China's first large coal-to-gas project began in northern China on Sunday. The project is designed to ensure natural gas supplies to Beijing and promote clean energy use.

Located in Chifeng of the coal-rich Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, the project will supply four billion cubic meters of natural gas annually to the Chinese capital via a 381-kilometer-pipeline.

The project is expected to supply 1.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2010, and 2.6 billion cubic meters in 2011. It will be fully completed in 2012.

Experts say the coal-based clean energy project will greatly reduce the emission of pollutants, help facilitate energy development restructuring and improve Beijing's air quality.
