Experts comment on China-US JCCT topics

The two sides in the China-US Joint Commission for Commerce and Trade have different focuses. Let's hear what experts have to say on this.

Zhang Hanlin from the University of International Business and Economics says the US' recent anti-dumping charges against China's tires and seamless steel pipes showcase the difficulties the US faces in recovery.

Washington has chosen to protect its domestic industries and jobs from overseas competition.

Professor Zhang Hanlin, University of Int'l Business & Economy said "I think China's focus will likely to be the rising trade protectionism in the US. After all, the US market is one of the biggest for China and it's very significant to China's export and economic growth."

Zhang says Barack Obama has said the US economy has to transfer from domestic demand driven to more export driven. That creates more chances for trade disputes. So China is focusing on whether the US can recognize China's market economy status, and admit China's manufacturing industry is more competitive in terms of scale and costs.

The US has made it clear that it will focus on exporting energy saving technology to China and intellectual property protection. Another topic will be the US dollar's dropping more than 10 percent from April.

Wu Jiahuang, Deputy Institute Director of Ministry of Commerce said "Chinese people cannot help wondering why the US dollar keeps falling, while the US side keeps pushing for a higher Chinese yuan."

But experts do not expect much dispute, as President Obama will visit China in a matter of weeks.
