China cracks down on WAP porn

2009-11-27 10:51 BJT

Following media exposure of the widespread availability of pornography on internet cell phones, China's three top operators have been sharply criticized.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has now ordered China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom to take immediate action. China has vowed to step up its ongoing crackdown on mobile WAP sites offering pornography for users, as the sites themselves are taking measures to avoid supervision.

The crackdown started on November the 16th and will last until the end of this year. It focuses on Shanghai, Beijing, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Anhui where many WAP sites are registered. China Mobile, the country's largest wireless carrier, has stopped cooperating with 460 "business promotion partners" since the crackdown began.
