This year has seen the launch of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of the need to protect intellectual property rights. But there's a special focus this week on cartoons and animation made right here at home.

The protection of IPR for makers of cartoons and animation is attracting attention from many in the industry.

They have turned up not only to showcase their own cartoons and animation, but also to discuss new ways to protect their copyrights.

Enterprise Delegate said "The whole industry needs to raise awareness of copyright protection. Owners and investors should know how to protect their legal rights. It's very important to make this knowledge publicly available."

The Chinese cartoon and animation industry has grown rapidly, producing over 130-thousand minutes of animation work every year. In 2008, the volume of domestic TV cartoons surged nearly 34 percent year on year to a record high.

Home-made cartoons have been broadcast widely across the nation and have dominated cartoon and children's channels. The rapid expansion has put pressure on the need to protect copyrights in the market.

Fan Weiping, Director of Publishing Industry Dev't Department, GAPP said "The cartoon industry has great originality and has attracted more and more ordinary people to get involved. The government has been trying to create a sound environment for copyright protection."

The current week-long event is just one such effort. Organizers say they aim to integrate the whole industry chain to protect IPR in the cartoon and animation industry. They have decided to turn this into an annual activity, in order to attract more public attention.
