Google must obey China's laws and traditions. A spokeman from the Foreign Ministry was speaking at a press conference on Tuesday.

Ma Zhaoxu also said Chinese law forbids hacking into systems. Citing figures from China's Internet Society he said eight out of ten computers in the country has been hacked into, with the number of hackings from foreign websites going up 148 percent in 2008. He added that China will maintain open policies to provide a conducive environment for foreign investors including Internet companies.

Ma Zhaoxu, spokesman of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said, "Foreign enterprises in China need to adhere to China's laws and regulations, respect the interest of the general public and cultural traditions and shoulder corresponding responsibilities. Google is no exception."
