And things were no less festive over in Thailand, where Chinese communities rang in the Lunar New Year in Chinatown on Bangkok's Yaowarat Road.

On Sunday, the Thai prime minister watched performances that had Chinese and Thai elements along with more than 2,000 people.

Later in the evening, the country's princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn also paid a visit to Yaowarat Road to attend the opening ceremony for celebrations of the Lunar New Year.

Abhisit Vejjajiva, Thai Prime Minister, said, "It's the Chinese New Year I wish the people of China happiness the progress of China made in recent years."
