Low carbon vox pops

Special Report: 2010 NPC & CPPCC Sessions |

A low carbon footprint seems to be the new buzz word for policy makers. So, how aware and how enthusiastic are the Chinese people to the concept?

The Chinese government has promised the world it will do its part in reducing carbon emissions. That responsibility also falls on each and every Chinese person. Their awareness and participation is crucial. So I asked people on the street what they know about a low carbon lifestyle.

Ms. Li said, "Drive one day less everyweek. I am also familiar with the promotion of solar power water heating."

Ms. Yu said, "Try to use environmentally friendly energy."

Mr. Zhao said, "It's great to promote saving energy and a low carbon life. It's also now required internationally. If we don't pay attention to it now, we may pay a higher cost in the future."

As one Chinese saying goes, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a small step. I asked ordinary people what small things they can do in daily life to go green.

Me. Wang said, "Drive less. I used to drive four days a week. Now everyweek I drive one day."

Ms. Hou said, "At home, I use the laundry water to clean the floor, water the flowers and rinse the toilet. I think many people do that. I am doing this not to save money. I just want to save water."

Mr. Zhan said, "We should try to write with a pen instead of printing."

Mr. Zhang said, "Try to use less plastic bags when shopping as the government asks."

Ms. Luo said, "Unplug the TV when you don't watch it. That can save power."

It seems people nowadays care a lot about environment issues. They say the country has compromised much on the environment in exchange for economic growth in the past decades and should not do that any longer. So here is what people want their government to do.

Mr. Zhang said, "The government should promote bus transportation. Garbage treatment is also an issue."

Ms. Yu said, "Legislation is necessary. And there needs to be more publicity."

Mr. Wang said, "Introduce a course in college so more students will get to know about a low carbon lifestyle."

Ms. Xu said, "Just promote environmental protection awareness."
