Taiwan authorities have raised the limit for daily mainland visitors from 4,000 to 6,000 in consideration of the upcoming Tomb Sweeping Day Period. Indeed, the island has become a popular tourist destination as it says daily mainland visitors have already passed this limit.

The new limit was set on March the 15th. But despite this, the Taiwan Tourism Bureau says they now deal with more than 7,000 mainland visitors each day, adding they expect 900,000 mainland visitors this year.

Janice Lai, Director General, Taiwan Tourism Bureau, said, "Around 2,000 mainland visitors arrived in Taiwan each day in January and February. But this figure surged greatly in March. The growth is what Taiwan authorities expected."

Revenue of Taiwan's tourism industry grew by nearly 15 percent last year despite the financial crisis, putting it at the top in the Asia-Pacific region. Taiwan authorities say mainland visitors contributed greatly to the growth.
