Special Report: Hu Visits 2 Nations, Attends APEC Summit |

President Hu Jintao and other leaders of the 21 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation member nations have convened in Singapore to explore ways of reviving the world economy.

"Sustaining Growth, Connecting the Region" was the theme that summed up the goals of Saturday's meeting.

During the first-day's session, APEC leaders exchanged views on "connecting the region."

President Hu Jintao outlined China's view of the multilateral trade regime.

In his remarks, Hu said safeguarding a stable multilateral trade regime and advancing the Doha Round negotiations will help promote the openness of international trade, curb trade protectionism and revive the world economy.

He urged APEC leaders to stand by their promises, oppose trade protectionism in all its manifestations, remain vigilant against and correct acts of "hidden" protectionism, reduce and eliminate trade barriers, and resolve trade disputes through dialogue and coordination.

Hu added that China strongly supports trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, and is committed to establishing a fair, open, equitable and non-discriminatory multilateral trade regime.

China is also ready to work with other members to play a constructive role and advance the Doha Round negotiations.

Regarding the future of APEC, Hu Jintao said the organization should continue to improve its efficiency as it faces new challenges and problems.

He outlined three proposals for its improvement, arguing that APEC should continue to liberalize and facilitate the integration of regional economies, explore new channels of economic cooperation, and provide tangible support to developing members.

He also said that China will contribute one million US dollars to encourage and facilitate cooperation with APEC members, and called for further reforms to APEC's procedural mechanism in order to improve the group's efficiency.
