Snow fighting measures underway

2009-11-18 17:11 BJT

As heavy snow continues to affect many parts of China, local governments are implementing measures to ensure daily necessities are in safe supply. Transportation departments and power supply sectors are constantly monitoring temperatures. Once the temperature drops below zero, emergency measures will be carried out.

Shaoguan city, in South China's Guangdong province, the snow has come much earlier than expected.

"The snow has come far earlier this year. Usually, it won't snow until December. And sometimes not even until February of next year, or even later."

Power companies are dispatching more personnel to check electrical lines. They are drawing lessons from last year's bitterly cold winter, installing ice-melting devices on transmitting equipment.

Due to low temperatures and humid weather, some parts of highways have been covered in ice. But transportation has seen minimal disruption due to preventative measures. There are 7 temperature monitoring points along the road. Once the temperature drops below zero, local transportation departments will take measures to clear any ice.
