The giant panda is indigenous to China, but has won the hearts of people the world over. On Tuesday, the San Diego Zoo in the US announced the name of a three-month old panda cub.
Panda fans are everywhere.
At the San Diego Zoo, a special event was organized to unveil the name of a three-month-old Chinese panda cub. Keepers chose the name--Yun Zi, meaning Son of Cloud.
Yun Zi was born in August, but followed Chinese tradition, of waiting a 100 days until choosing a name.
The cub weighed 113 grams when he was born. He is undergoing physical checks on a weekly basis. Now, the once tiny cub has grown into a vigorous boy, weighing five kilograms.
P.K. Robbins, Associate Vet of San Diego Zoo, said, "He's up to six kilos, which is pretty robust. He's a full-figured panda, which is terrific. He's going to be a manly man, I suppose. He was certainly very engaged and very engaging. He's quite appealing, irresistible, I'd have to say."
Yun Zi is the fifth cub born to the Zoo's 300-pound mother panda Bai Yun, meaning " White Cloud". The Zoo even opened a web site where visitors can view the mother and cub in real time. But the homepage briefly crashed after it swarmed by users, eager to get a glimpse of the Zoo's new toddler.
There are 14 Chinese pandas in the US. According to an agreement, pandas born abroad are still the possession of China, and are to be returned to the country when they reach four years old.
