NE China's coal mine blast death toll rises to 107

2009-11-25 16:51 BJT

The death toll from the deadly coal mine blast in China's northeast Heilongjiang province has risen to 107 after two more bodies were retrieved this morning. Rescuers are continuing to search for two people still trapped underground.

The main focus has shifted from the rescue operation to compensation. Relatives of the victims have two options. They can have compensation paid in a lump sum, or receive the money on a monthly basis. The amount of money is decided by local living conditions. So far, relatives of 18 victims have signed agreements on compensation with the coal mine company.

Investigators blame poor management and inadequate safety precautions for last Saturday's serious accident at the Xinxing mine.
