Fog halts transport in Northern China

2009-11-25 16:51 BJT

Heavy fog has forced the cancellation of flights and closure of expressways in northern and central China.

Visibility dropped to less than a kilometer in eastern and southern Beijing. Many flights out of the Beijing Capital International Airport were postponed. In Shandong province, visibility fell to under 200 meters in some areas. Nearly a hundred expressway toll booths are temporarily closed.

Shaanxi province has seen a sharp increase in traffic accidents. The worst was a rear-end collision involving 32 cars. 2 people were killed, and 14 injured. The fog will gradually dissipate with the coming of a cold front. Light sleet is forecast for Beijing tonight.
