A passenger train has derailed in Russia, killing 22 people and injured at least 55 others.

The train was traveling from Moscow to St. Petersburg when it derailed near a town about 350 kilometers northwest of Moscow on Friday. Russia's Interfax news agency reported that a one meter-diameter hole was found next to the railway track.

Witnesses said they heard a loud explosion before the accident. The news agency reported the derailment could be linked to an act of terrorism. Medics, rescue teams and police are continue to work at the scene.
