5.9 earthquake hits Indonesia

2009-12-23 16:50 BJT

An earthquake has struck Indonesia's Mentawai islands off Sumatra. But no tsunami warning has been issued.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was a magnitude 5.9, and struck 113 kilometers west-southwest of Padang. There were no immediate reports of damage. More than 1,000 people died when a powerful earthquake hit the city of Padang in September.

Indonesia sits in the so-called pacific ring of fire, an area of intense seismic activity in the Pacific Ocean.
