China's fifth naval mission to the Gulf of Aden has taken over the escort duties in a handover ceremony in the pirate-infested waters.

The ceremony was held late Wednesday evening on board the missile frigate Ma'anshan.

During the handover, officers transferred documents and equipment, and briefed the new command on the features of piracy and merchant vessel escort patterns.

The two fleets had been working together for some time escorting 26 Chinese and foreign ships.
