Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping has called for closer cooperation between China and Belgium during his visit in Brussels. He made the call at the China-Belgium Economic and Trade Forum.

About 500 business people from China, Belgium and the European Union took part in Friday's trade forum.

He pointed out that bilateral trade volume rose 14 percent to 20 billion US dollars last year despite the global financial crisis.

The vice president called for both countries to further tap their cooperation potential. He proposed to expand the scale of bilateral trade and investment. He said cooperation should be expanded in fields such as biotech, new energy and environmental protection.

Xi Jinping said both countries should enhance exchanges on technology and develop their reciprocal cooperation, adding that Belgian companies are welcome to participate in development projects in China.

Xi called on both sides to continue improving services and management to form a better environment for trade and investment.
