The Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, Xu Caihou, is continuing his visit to the US. He met with US Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and other US officials, on Wednesday. Both sides pledged to promote better military relations.
At an arrival ceremony the US Defense Secretary welcomes the visiting Chinese military officer.
During the meeting at the Pentagon, both sides agree on concrete steps to strengthen military exchanges in seven fields.
This includes expanding high-level military exchanges, and more cooperation on humanitarian and disaster relief. Both sides also pledge strengthening exchanges between land forces, and promoting maritime safety through diplomatic channels and negotiation mechanisms.
In pushing for more frequent military exchanges, the two leaders also plan detailed schedules. On the list is Robert Gates' visit to China next year, and a working meeting between defense departments later this year. They also decide on vessel visits between the two navies, and joint drill for air-sea rescue and disaster relief.
Xu Caihou also expresses China's willingness for healthy military relations with the US. He lists four obstacles hampering relations. This includes US arms sales to Taiwan, and US vessel activity in China's exclusive economic zone. Xu is urging joint efforts from both sides to promote a stable relationship, which is crucial for regional and world peace.
