Taiwan speeds up residents' inoculations with A/H1N1 vaccine

Taiwan has begun inoculating residents with the A/H1N1 flu vaccine. As the disease spreads ever more quickly across the island, over 1,000 schools have been closed. The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control said it hopes that half of all residents will be vaccinated by mid-February.

At a shelter in Kaoh-siung, residents lined up to be vaccinated with their children.

The first batch of vaccines were imported from Switzerland, totaling 370,000 doses. People who have been affected by the recent floods and health care personnel were the first to receive the shots. The locally produced vaccine is still undergoing tests, and will be available in mid-November.

The Centers for Disease Control said that children and students are next in line. Young people 19 to 24, and hospitalized patients in serious condition, will be vaccinated next January.
