Efforts to retrieve sunken ship in Hubei

2009-11-03 10:41 BJT

A rescue team is trying to retrieve a sunken cargo ship from a section of the Yangtze River in central China's Hubei Province. Early on Sunday, two cargo ships collided due to strong winds.

Crew members aboard the sunken ship were saved immediately after the accident. The sunken ship was carrying 100 tons of hydrochloric acid for industrial use when the accident occurred. An initial test showed the pH level in a three kilometer radius around the accident scene was between 7 and a half to 8, which is within the normal range. The local environmental protection department is closely monitoring the water quality, testing it every two hours.
