As digging work for Xiamen's Xiang'an Tunnel is complete. The project is the first undersea tunnel on the mainland.
The project features two three-lane tunnels and is about 9 kilometers long, including the 6-kilometer underwater section. The tunnel is costing 3.2 billion yuan and it was designed by Chinese engineers. Construction work began in 2005, and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Once in use, the new link will cut the travel time between Xiamen Island and Xiang'an district to 9 minutes.
