The government of Macao will soon implement relief measures to help local people tackle the problem of water salinity. Currently, the water storage capacity of Macao's main reservoir can only provide enough drinking water for 10 days.
After a continuous drought began to seriously threaten the entire Peal River region, the city of Zhuhai, in Guangdong Province, and Macao, now face the problem of water shortages.
Macao's Maritime Administration has strengthened its cooperation with its mainland counterpart. It now plans to hold regular meetings every two weeks between October and February of next year to ensure sufficient water supplies.
Macao's Maritime Administration says the salinity level of its water is slightly elevated, but the index is still below the safe drinking level of 250. Should the salinity level reach a moderate level, or greater than 250, for longer than five days, relief measures will be launched.
Susana Wong, Director of Macao Maritime Administration, said, "We are drafting an outline on relief measures for water conservation. I hope all sectors are working hard to prepare for the construction of a water conservation society."
