Special Report: 2010 NPC & CPPCC Sessions |

Educational reform, especially higher education reforms have been the focus for some CPPCC members. They are preparing proposals on better development of the education system.

Wu Xianhua has been working in the field of higher education for almost 30 years. As a CPPCC member, he thinks the current recruitment system in which one exam decides the fate of the students is not in line with the new talent demand of society.

CPPCC member Wu Xianhua said, "My proposal is for the different schools to decide the content of the exams according to their characteristics and choose their students with specialties and potential. "

Another hot topic is to give more management rights to the schools.

CPPCC member Chen Dezhan said,"The universities should be able to be managed independently by professors. There should not be too much involvement of administrative work in teaching and scientific research. Academic research and administration should be separated."

CPPCC member Xie Shijie said, "Different schools should have different educational modules, that is the way to cultivate talents with different traits. "

Higher education reforms have been in the proposals of CPPCC members for years, some of the proposed reforms have been tested in parts of the country.

In Zhejiang, the subject of the entrance exams are not all the same with the rest of the country, but determined by the different types of schools.

Yu Jianzhong, headmaster, Pingyao Middle school, Zhejiang, said, "The new exam systems are encouraging to our school. It helps us with quality education and develop and cultivate students with different personalities. "

The current entrance exam and higher education system has been in place for over 30 years. Reforms will not come in one day. But, with close study from the test results from schools like in Zhejiang, members are revising and improving their proposals aimed at promoting China's higher education development.
