According to the Chinese zodiac of animal signs, the next lunar year will be "The Year of the Dog". So it's no surprise that retailers across China are stocking up on anything resembling a pooch to cash in on New Year's gift giving.

Shops in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonumous Region, have already stocked their shelves for New Year's gift shoppers. Everything from cups and slippers and to handbags has doggy designs on it. Shop owners say as long as it's got a dog on it, it will sell.

The shopper said: "To have a downy dog doll or something decorated with it is considered auspicious for the New Year."

In Xuchang city in Henan, these glittering symbols of luck are made out of porcelain, crystal and jade to cater to adults.

Chinese people traditionally consider the dog to be an auspicious pet, because its barking sound resembles "Wang", or " Prosperity", in Chinese.
