A group of tourists from Taiwan is traveling along the ancient Silk Road in northwestern China. It's hoped their trip is the beginning of more Silk Road tourism from the island. The group arrived at the foot of Helan Mountain last weekend in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, bringing to life many childhood fantasies.
This is the place these tourists learned about through ancient poems but had never set foot upon. This area was the capital of the Western Xia kingdom about one thousand years ago. Imperial tombs, Buddhist pagodas, and other reminders of that glorious past dot the landscape, inspiring awe amongst the tour group.
Tourists said: "I was surprised by all the fascinating sights. I feel this is an extremely worthwhile experience."
Tourists said: "Few people from Taiwan have been to the Silk Road. Now I have something interesting to tell my friends when I get back. "
All 44 members of the tour group work in the tourism industry themselves. Their Silk Road trip includes stops in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region as well as Gansu and Shaanxi provinces.
