China's publishing industry reaching out

China's publishing industry experienced a fruitful year of stepping onto the global arena. In 2009, China realized its "going-out" strategy, which encourages Chinese publishers to export more book copyrights abroad in a bid to promote Chinese culture.

In the new year, the General Administration of Press and Publication drafted a proposal concerning the development of China's publishing industry. It says that the administration will back more and more domestic publishing enterprises to break into the overseas market.

January 4th was the first working day after the new year holiday, and staff at the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press were busy working on editing a 50-episode television series that teaches foreigners how to speak Chinese. The series will be aired in 45 European countries in February.

In 2009, the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press collaborated with a dozen internationally renowned publishing enterprises, such as Oxford, to publish more than one hundred Chinese language teaching materials.

The annual Frankfurt Book Fair, which took place from October 13th through the 18th in 2009, is a fitting example to illustrate how China's publishing industry has been extending its influence worldwide.
