"Invictus" is based on a book by journalist John Carlin - "Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation."

The movie tells how Mandela brought the 1995 Rugby World Cup to his country, using the South African team to rally his countrymen and ease racial tensions between blacks and whites.

Morgan Freeman plays Mandela and Matt Damon is the South African team captain.

The word invictus is Latin for "unconquered" or "unconquerable." It's the title of a poem by Englishman William Ernest Henley, published in 1875.

At the London premiere, Freeman said he hopes the movie will receive Oscar nominations. The film has already won Eastwood and Freeman Best Director and Best Actor from the US National Board of Review.
