The Tibet Autonomous Region has put a lot of energy into protection the region's cultural relics. So far, nearly 800 sites have been recognized as having great historical value and are being carefully preserved.

According to the third census of cultural relics conducted in Tibet in 2007, there are 4268 untransferable historical sites in Tibet. Over 55-million yuan and a large amount of material, such as gold and silver, were spent on the renovation project of the Potala Palace from 1989 to 1994.

And in 2002 an extra amount was spent on the renewal of the Potala Palace, Norbulinka, and Sakya Monastery, making the total investment reach an unprecedented 380 million yuan.
