Fashion heats red carpet

For the world's celebrities, January through March means fashion decision after fashion decision. There's the Golden Globes, Grammys, Berlin Film Festival, and finally the Oscars to dress for. Because for the world's fashion lovers, what the stars are wearing is often more important than what they're winning. On today's "Style Watch", we take a look at the gorgeous clothes that have been parading down red carpets this awards season.

Simple style

Stars have been braving the cold weather to show their seductive figures and beautiful clothes. Simple is the theme of this awards season. There have been open backs and strapless and belted gowns aplenty on red carpets.

At the Golden Globes, Oscar-winner Renee Zellweger embodied Hollywood glamour in her black gown. Asymmetrical necklines and hemlines coupled with her slender figure took breaths away.

While Zellweger showed off her post-Bridget Jones weigh-loss, Gwyneth Paltrow was proud to show off her new pounds. She dressed in a Renaissance-inspired outfit that did not hide her pregnancy.

Asian stars chose clothing that reflected their ethnic backgrounds. At the Berlin Festival, South Korean star Lee Young Ah set off a frenzy of flashbulbs with her unique Korean-style gown.

classic black & white

In keeping with the theme of simple, classic black and white have been everywhere this year.

But at the Golden Globes, Zhang Ziyi challenged the trend with a glorious chartreuse mousseline sheath. It was one of several big, 50s-styled, strapless ball-gowns.

Less means more

Accessories also went simple this year. Compared with previous years when stars glittered from head to toe with huge pieces of jewelry, this year modesty ruled.

At the Golden Globes, Natalie Portman's vintage black-lace dress was adorned with only a finger ring.

But in strong contrast, on the Grammy red carpet, R&B singer Mary J. Blige came with a complete diamond outfit -- from earring, necklace, bracelet to finger ring and handbag.

Now the world fashion enthusiasts are fixing their eyes on the 78th Academy Awards, which will be held at LA's Kodak Theater on March 5. Will the Oscar red carpet bring continued simplicity or surprise everyone with sumptuousness? For those eager to find out, there's only one option, book your ticket on the sofa for Oscar night.
