Qianmen's historic restaurants are seeing a boost in business now, and they'll likely see one come summer, too -- wherever they may be. That's because June 10 will be the date of China's first-ever National Cultural Heritage Day. Right now, cultural protection agencies and museums around the country are busy preparing for the occasion.
A tentative schedule of events leading up to the day has already been announced. From June 5 to 10 China will see a series of exhibitions, lectures and seminars. And most museums and libraries will be open to the general public free of charge. It was last December that the central government designated the second Saturday in June as National Cultural Heritage Day. China joins a group of nearly 50 countries that have dedicated a special day to their heritage.
