Golden cake empties wallets

A cake that looks like golden treasure in Taiwan. The delectable desert will be a highlight of the upcoming Taiwan Cake Show. But before visitors dig in, they need to make sure they can back up their expensive tastes.

This palm-sized cake costs 2,500 yuan, or about three hundred U.S. dollars. Why so expensive? For one, the icing looks like exquisite gold -- and the cake takes forever to make.

Su Xiangxin, Pastry Chef said: "There are five stages to making the cake. And the cake needs to be frozen for four hours after each stage."

That means you'll have to quell your hunger for two days before the cake you ordered is finished. But this is one treat that's worth the wait. Gold is said to be good for health.

But if gold cakes aren't your thing, don't worry. The Cake Show opening Thursday in Taipei will also carry such curiosities as a Flame Cake and a Cactus Jam Mousse.
