Armani, D&G show in Milan

Milan Fashion Week started on Monday with something for everyone. Well-known design houses Armani and Dolce and Gabbana dazzled the Italian fashion capital with their fall-winter 2006-2007 creations.

Giorgio Armani sent out his models in the big-shouldered uptown chic look that made him the iconic designer of the 1980s.

The collection was strictly feminine, with plunging necklines and figure-hugging skirts. High stiletto heels tied at the ankle and tiny hats arranged on tightly pulled back hair completed the look.

Models sashayed out in skirts of all shapes and sizes. From tight pencil numbers to flowing 50s skirts and balloon hemlines. There wasn't a pair of trousers in sight.

With an eye to Oscar night, the designer chose several 1950s wrap dresses with full biased skirts. These included a show-stopping, plunging silver example worn with a red curling headdress. And also a daring sheer silver-and-lame number for the more daring clients of the normally conservative Armani.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana offered up a white Christmas with their diffusion D&G line. They turned the summer's lacy looks into an all-white collection of delicate and sexy cashmere mini dresses and oversized scarves and chunky knits. These were paired with oh-so-tiny hotpants and tasselled snow boots or clogs.

The show's kitsch piece-de-resistance came at the end. Santa's sleigh pulled onto the catwalk in a blizzard of fake snow. Father Christmas handed out candy to the front rows while models in "Merry Christmas" t-shirts danced to Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas".
