A ferry carrying nearly 1-thousand passengers sank in the southern Philippines early on Sunday, leaving at least nine dead and more than 30 missing.

The Superferry 9 began to list in the early morning on Sunday. Rescuers transferred most of the passengers to two nearby commercial ships, a navy gunboat and a fishing boat.

A search for the 33 missing people is still underway. The weather was clear when the ferry began to have problems, but reports have revealed the vessel's generator was not operating properly.

Some experts have said that the ship's cargo may have been incorrectly balanced.
