Celebrations for the New China's 60th birthday continued into the night on Thursday with a grand gala at Tian'anmen Square. The carnival-like atmosphere culminated in 60 birthday candle-shaped fireworks lighting up the vast square.

A teenage boy, standing at the podium for the flag-raising ceremony, played the melody of the song of "My Motherland".

Fireworks lit up Beijing's night sky, lifting people's spirits in the capital and across the whole country.

A curtain of fireworks -- 90 meters wide and 25 meters high exploded. It was a shimmering painting of China's natural beauty.

This year's National Day fireworks display was the biggest-ever in terms of scale and artistic designs.

A light cube performance on the ground added more color.

The images were formed by more than 4,000 trees of LED lights.

Tens of thousands of performers created the evening's carnival-like atmosphere.

Red lanterns, bright lights, high-spirited songs and dances turned Tian'anmen Square into a sea of joy.

Dressed in traditional festive costumes, 3,000 performers representing China's 56 ethnic groups danced to traditional songs.

The country's top singers also took center stage.

Veteran performers showcased their skills to a nationwide audience.
