Authorities say the death toll from typhoon Parma in the Philippines has risen to 299.

Officials say most victims are from central and northern parts of the country, areas devastated by serious landslides and flooding. So far more than 20,000 homes have been damaged.

Rescue operations are centered on two vast areas, the severely flooded Pang-asi-nan province, northwest of Manila and the landslide hit province of Benguet. The resort city of Baguio is also a focus of rescue operations.

US military helicopters are on hand to help the Philippine air force deliver aid to areas where traffic has been cut off.
