2009-11-05 14:43 BJT

Heavy rains along Mexico's southern Gulf Coast have caused flooding in the state of Tabasco. Three people were killed and more than 44-thousand were forced to evacuate.

Tabasco's governor said houses in 91 communities have been flooded. The federal government has declared a state of emergency in those affected communities.

Troops are helping to rescue people still trapped in their homes. More than 10-thousand evacuees are staying at 34 temporary shelters.

Mexico's National Weather Service said the cold front which triggered the flooding will begin to move away slowly, but predicted possible rain storms on Thursday.
