Special Report: China-Africa Cooperation Forum |
As the most influential regional organization in the Arab world, the League of Arab States, or LAS, plays an important role in promoting regional peace and boosting the regional economy. Now let's take a brief look at its history.
On March 22nd, 1945, representatives from 7 Arab countries gathered in Cairo, in response to an Egyptian initiative.
The meeting adopted the Charter of the Arab League, and the League of Arab States, or the Arab League, was formed.
The main goal of the league was to "draw closer the relations between member States and co-ordinate collaboration between them, to safeguard their independence and sovereignty, and to consider in a general way the affairs and interests of the Arab countries."
The Arab League has 22 members in all in Asia and Africa. Its headquarters is in Cairo.
At a special summit meeting of Arab states held in Cairo in 2000, it decided that a regular meeting of the summit of Arab States would be held every year.
Since its establishment, the Arab League has held 21 summits. By the end of 2008, 130 ministerial council meetings have been held, as well as many special or urgent meetings.
The Arab League has representative offices or information centers in many countries.
Since it came into being in 1945, the Arab League has always attached great importance to its friendly exchanges with China, and has sent delegations to China many times.
China established formal relations with the LAS in 1956.
