Navy officers, sailors, and New York dignitaries joined first responders and families of September 11th victims for the ceremony on a Manhattan pier.

The seven and a half tons of steel debris from ground zero was melted down to form the bow of the USS New York.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she hoped the ship would show the strength of the nation and its people. 360 sailors and 3 Marines will form the vessel's crew.
