2009-11-20 16:47 BJT

Efforts continue to rescue two hundred people stranded by rising floodwater in a northern England tourist town.

Police in Cockermouth, in the picturesque Lake District, say three helicopters are lifting out the stranded. The UK Coast Guard rescue service is using dinghies to navigate the flooded streets.

Britain's Meteorological Office says the area saw a deluge of about 170 millimeters of rain in 24 hours. Heavy rain also hit other parts of the UK earlier on Thursday.

Flood warnings have been issued across Scotland, northern England and Wales.
