A presidential election aimed at helping Romania emerge from a political and economic crisis has failed to produce a winner.

On Sunday, the country held elections to choose a new president. 12 candidates entered the race for the state's top position.

Exit polls give incumbent President Traian Basescu a narrow lead with 32.8 percent of the vote, main opponent, Mircea Geoana of the Social Democrats garnered 31.7 percent. According to the Romanian Constitution, Basescu and Geoana will now be involved in a presidential run-off on December 6th.
